Selasa, 29 September 2026NORTH SUMATRA — Where Volcanic Heritage Meets the Art of Coffee
Millions of years ago, a powerful volcanic eruption reshaped the earth, giving birth to the magnificent caldera that is now home to Lake Toba. Over time, the fertile volcanic soil, enriched by nature and nourished by the morning mist, became an ideal environment for coffee cultivation. Today, this extraordinary landscape is preparing to host a celebration that tells the remarkable story of coffee, from the hands of farmers to the final brew in a cup.
Marking International Coffee Day on October 1, 2026, North Sumatra is set to welcome the 3rd Lake Toba Coffee Festival, taking place from October 1 to 3, 2026. Throughout these three days, the eight regencies surrounding the world’s largest volcanic lake will come together in a shared celebration of coffee, a treasured commodity that has shaped the livelihoods, traditions, and cultural identity of local communities for generations.
A Floating Celebration: The Festival Comes Aboard Pinisi Mokhsa
Initially planned to take place in the picturesque surroundings of the Thousand Caves Nature Tourism Area, the festival has undergone a venue adjustment in response to ongoing road access improvements and the approaching rainy season. The organizing committee has therefore relocated the main event to the deck of Pinisi Mokhsa, transforming a logistical challenge into an extraordinary opportunity.
Rather than diminishing the experience, this relocation introduces a distinctive dimension to the festival. Visitors will enjoy the rich flavors of Toba coffee while sailing across the expansive waters of Lake Toba, surrounded by the dramatic beauty of its caldera landscape. Onboard the traditional wooden vessel, the fragrance of freshly brewed coffee will mingle with the cool lake breeze, creating an atmosphere where culture, nature, and gastronomy come together in harmony.
More than a conventional festival or marketplace, this event is envisioned as a comprehensive celebration of the coffee value chain. It offers visitors an opportunity to explore every stage of coffee production, from the dedication of farmers cultivating their plantations and the expertise of roasters developing distinctive flavor profiles to the precision of baristas crafting the perfect cup. Each stage reflects the skill, patience, and passion behind Indonesia’s coffee heritage.
A Journey Through Indonesia’s Coffee Heritage: 71 Geographical Indications
One of the most significant highlights of the third edition of the festival is the participation of 71 Indonesian Coffee Geographical Indications (GI), showcasing the remarkable diversity of coffee cultivated across the archipelago.
From the deep, earthy character of Acehnese coffee to the distinctive aromas of Java and the vibrant fruity notes of Papua’s highland varieties, this gathering brings together an extraordinary spectrum of Indonesian coffee profiles in one destination: Lake Toba.
Geographical Indication certification recognizes the unique qualities of products shaped by their geographical origins, including local climate, soil composition, cultivation methods, and inherited traditions. In coffee, these elements combine to create flavor characteristics that cannot simply be replicated elsewhere.
The presence of 71 Coffee GIs at the festival highlights Indonesia’s position not merely as a producer of agricultural commodities, but as a country with a rich and diverse specialty coffee heritage worthy of international recognition.
Building Global Connections Through Collaboration
Behind this remarkable celebration lies a strong network of collaboration among various institutions and stakeholders. The festival is jointly driven by the Lake Toba Caldera Geopark Cooperative, the Toba Caldera Geopark Management Body, the Lake Toba Authority Implementing Agency (BPODT), and Ikanas STAN.
Supported by regional governments, relevant ministries, state-owned enterprises, and private-sector partners, this collective effort demonstrates how cross-sector cooperation can create meaningful opportunities for cultural promotion, economic development, and international engagement.
The festival’s ambitions extend well beyond the shores of Lake Toba. As part of its international outreach, the organizing committee is preparing to send official invitations to Indonesian Embassies (KBRI) in various friendly countries, encouraging international communities to experience firsthand the distinctive flavors and cultural richness of Indonesian coffee.
Through this initiative, Lake Toba aims to strengthen its position as a destination where local heritage meets global appreciation, bringing Indonesia’s coffee story to a wider international audience.
As October 1 approaches, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee will once again invite visitors to discover the beauty of Lake Toba from the deck of Pinisi Mokhsa. Every cup served at the 3rd Lake Toba Coffee Festival carries a story of farmers’ dedication, the preservation of nature, and the enduring traditions of local communities.
More than a celebration of coffee, this festival is an invitation to experience the spirit of Indonesia—cultivated by the earth, nurtured by its people, and shared with the world, one cup at a time.
